Do you love food, or do you love to eat?

Since joining Weight Watchers back in March, I have discovered a few good weight loss blogs that allow me to follow the well documented journeys of other people on the same path that I’m on.  One of those blogs is All The Weigh, a very well written and inspiring blog by Kenlie Tiggeman.  I have her blog in my ‘daily reads ‘ list, and I really enjoy following her journey.  Recently, she had a guest blogger who in the course of her post quoted a screenplay she had written–

“If  you’re surrounded by gourmet food and you gain weight, you don’t love food – you love eating.  You can experience a burst of flavor in a tiny bite of roasted red pepper.”

This really made me think about how I look at food.  Do I love food, or do I love the act of eating?  Sad to say, but more times than not, it’s the act of eating…because I can scarf down certain foods so fast it’s not even funny…taste what?  Oh…I better eat another one!

I’ve been rolling that statement around in my head for the last two days, mindful of it every time I eat something.  It has caused me to slow down and actually enjoy my food more than I ever have before.  I find myself appreciating the aromas and appearance of the food, as well as the setting in which I eat it.   That quote has been the catalyst for change.  It’s not the quantity of the food and the rapidity with which it’s consumed that makes you a food lover…it’s appreciating all of the things that you don’t experience when you’re simply stuffing food into your face.

If I love food and not the act of eating, then smaller portions of my favorite foods should be satisfying, because I’m taking the time to enjoy them.  Honestly, I feel like a light bulb went off in my head when I read that and I don’t know why I had never thought of it myself.

So along with the challenge of losing weight to regain my optimum health, I’m going to focus on loving food and not the act of eating.  It should be a rewarding experience.

Which is it for you? Do you love food, or do you love to eat?
